ORLANDO, Fla. -- At the same hole where John Daly once made an 18, Bubba Watson hit three balls into the water off the tee and recorded an 11, leading to a score of 83 and a withdrawal after the first round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Watson, who won the Masters in 2012 and has played well recently, winning the Northern Trust Open and finishing runner-up two weeks ago at Doral, cited allergies as his reason for pulling out of the tournament. He later tweeted:
The five-time PGA Tour winner started on the back nine at Bay Hill and made a triple-bogey at the par-4 18th hole, followed by bogeys at the first and second holes.
At the sixth, a par-5 around water, Watson hit his ball in the hazard three times off the tee. He parred his final three holes for an 11-over 83.
Daly, who last week shot a 90 at Innisbrook with a 12 on the 16th hole, made an 18 at Bay Hill's sixth hole in 1998, one of numerous double-digit scores in his career.
Adam Scott was leading after a first-round 62, 21 shots better than Watson's score.
"Looking forward to getting back out there #twoweekstoAugusta," Watson said on Twitter.
